There have been and still are renowned players who have mastered this instrument. The best known player is 'Palakad Mani Iyer'. The other person is 'Palani Subramaniam Pillai'. There are other living legends like 'Umayalpuram Sivaraman', 'Trichy Sankaran', 'Palakad Raghu', 'Karaikudi Mani', Vellore Ramabhadran, Anoor Anantha Krishna Sharma, Kovai Venugopal, 'Mannargudi Easwaran'. To master this instrument requires immense practice and control. The fingering and coordination between the two hands while playing this instrument makes it a very difficult instrument to play. Nevertheless its unique tone and vibration makes it the best percussion instrument that has ever been, atleast in my opinion
